The first Jack-o-Lanterns were not made of pumpkins. Early american immigrants began the Halloween tradition of making festive holiday lanterns by carving small vegetables such as potatoes and turnips and placing a small candle inside.

Today carved pumpkins are a favorite Jack-o-Lantern decorating activity at Halloween.
